Built for outside

An outdoor bar is an exterior wall

A stucco bar front, a grill station in an apartment courtyard or a patio wall at a restaurant is built like a short exterior wall, with extra problems: heat, grease, cleaning chemicals, ice machines and constant contact. When those features crack, the cause is usually the base, such as framing without a proper weather barrier, block without control joints, or a countertop that sends water back into the wall instead of off the edge.

We build amenity and outdoor dining features on a base suited to the job, concrete block or properly sheathed framing, with lath, cement stucco and a finish matched to the building. Caps and countertop overhangs are detailed to shed water, clearances around grills and heat sources follow the appliance manufacturer's requirements, and the stucco is kept clear of paving so it can drain.

For repairs, we cut out failed areas, correct the detail that let water in and blend the finish so the feature matches the rest of the property. Gas, plumbing and electrical stay with licensed trades, and we coordinate with them. See also restaurants and apartment communities.

Picking the right base for the space

Concrete block is the most durable base for an outdoor bar or grill station. It does not rot, it takes stucco directly, and it handles the heat around commercial grills. It is heavy, so it needs a slab or footing that can carry it, which matters on elevated amenity decks.

A framed base with cement board is lighter and easier to shape, which helps with curved bars, long runs and decks with weight limits. If the frame is combustible, grills must be installed with the insulated jacket or clearances their manufacturer requires, and we plan the openings around that from the start. Load limits on decks and podiums are confirmed by the owner’s engineer or design team.

For existing features, refinishing is often the simplest option when the base is sound. We check before we quote and tell you if a crack or stain points to a problem a new coat would only cover.

Our process

Building around guests and residents

We schedule around service hours and pool seasons, and around the licensed trades, so gas, plumbing and power rough-ins are in place before a base is closed up.

Plan & lay out

We review the plans, confirm equipment cut-outs and clearances, and mark where licensed trades need to bring utilities.

  • Equipment specs reviewed
  • Slab & drainage checked
  • Written, itemized scope

Build the base

Block is laid or the frame is built and sheathed in cement board, with openings framed for grills, refrigeration and doors.

  • Square, level base
  • Openings framed to spec
  • Work area fenced off

Stucco & finish

Base and finish coats are applied and cured, the bottom edge is detailed to shed water, and the color is matched to the building.

  • Coats cured properly
  • Drip edge at the slab
  • Color & texture matched

Patios & courtyards

Decatur dines outside

Patio seating is a big part of how restaurants on and around the square and in Oakhurst do business, and many newer apartment communities lease on their courtyards.

Work on those spaces has to fit around service, events and resident use, so we schedule restaurant work early in the week or outside service hours and phase courtyard work so part of the amenity stays open. A patio that extends into a sidewalk or public space, or a change to the building's exterior, may need city approval, so check with the City of Decatur before the design is final.

Heat & grease

Finishes and clearances chosen for walls next to grills, smokers and kitchen exhaust.

Caps & counters

Tops sloped and detailed so rain and washdown water leave the wall.

Around service hours

Restaurant patio work scheduled before opening or on slow days.

Questions & answers

Outdoor dining & amenity FAQ for Decatur

Questions from Decatur restaurant owners and apartment property managers.

Do new patio walls at a Decatur restaurant need city approval?
Often. New walls, structures or changes to outdoor seating can involve building permits and, downtown, design or right-of-way review. Check with the City of Decatur, or DeKalb County if the property is outside city limits, before the design is final.
Can you rebuild a pool cabana or courtyard wall at our Decatur apartment community without closing the amenity?
In most cases. We fence off the area being worked, phase the project so part of the courtyard or pool deck stays open, and schedule around peak use and community events when management asks.
Can stucco be used next to a commercial grill?
Yes, with the correct clearances and build-up. Cement stucco over block or a noncombustible base handles heat well; we follow the grill or appliance manufacturer's clearance requirements and protect the wall from grease where needed.
Do you install the gas, plumbing or electrical?
No. Those stay with licensed trades. We build and finish the stucco structure and coordinate openings and sleeves with them.
Is a block base or a framed base better for an outdoor bar?
Block is heavier and more durable around heat and impact. A framed base can work if it is built with exterior sheathing, a weather barrier and proper drainage. We recommend based on the location, loads and appliances.
Why do outdoor bar fronts and grill walls crack?
Usually because water gets in at the top or the base, the substrate moves, or there are no control joints. Heat cycling near grills adds stress. Fixing the cap and the base detail stops most recurring cracks.
